The Screaming Brendas hailed from Darwin and were around in the late 90s – early 2000s. The band sent me this cool 3-track demo on CDR for a DIY as fuck compilation I put out around that time called Punk? Rodeo. From memory, which is sketchy, the band broke up after a personnel change that didn’t work out. Rickos of The Screaming Brendas went on to form an alternative country band called The Duanes. The Brendas were a great band. If anyone wants the full demo just email me.

Paint Stripper is one of my favourite Australian bands from the mid 1990s. Today’s track Prozac 20 is from their 1996 LP, Strontium 90. Information on Paint Stripper is criminally absent from the web as far as I can tell. The Melbourne trio put out three releases between 1994 and 1996. Paint Stripper (1994), Rubbish Truck EP (1995) and Strontium 90 (1996). I’m sure there would be a few other compilations etc they appeared on during that time as well. I recently picked up a split 7 inch with Rapido label mates Pollen released in 1995 featuring Rose Coloured Glasses from Strontium 90.

Below is footage of the band on YouTube performing this track live, possibly on Melbourne community TV station Channel 31. Although both these tracks feature Tonya on vocals, vocal duties for the band were shared with guitarist Andrew Wills. On the first Paint Stripper release, Neil Thomason (who went on to form Ricaine), features in the line up on vocals as well.

If you like what you hear, check out the links at the end of this post. You can pick up a copy of Strontium 90 for just $1.95 at Rocking Horse Records.

Note: The start of Crazed is real quiet for the first 28 secs.

Does anyone remember the Newcastle band Peyote? They seemed to disappear as quickly as they arrived on the scene back in 1995. I don’t know/remember much about them so would appreciate it if anyone could fill in the gaps. The one thing I do distinctly remember is the first time I heard them on Rage with the video for their single Crazed (or possibly Bean Curst?). From memory the video was simply live footage of the band. No Peyote love that I can find on the YouTubes thus far.

Peyote picked up the support slot on Faith No More’s Australian tour. They also played at the Alternative Nation festival. Their track Bean Curst appears on both the Alternative Nation CD and on Triple J’s Twelve compilation. Apparently a self-titled 4-track CD was released in the same year following on from Crazed but I haven’t been able to track that one down – if anyone can enlighten me about that please do! As far as I know they only had two releases and don’t appear to have survived beyond 1995. Band members were Justin King (vocals), Fin (guitar), Gavin (bass) and Sasha (drums).
